Top 5 Tips for Mount & Blade: Warband

With the release of Mount and Blade: Bannerlord in the near future, it is sometimes nice to go back to the previous games to get an idea of what the gameplay is like. Mount and Blade Warband is a medieval Sandbox game where your fate is in your hands. You can become ruler of the land or just enjoy your time as a trader. The choice is yours, however, this game isn’t the easiest to start out with and that is why I have decided to write out some tips to help newcomers to get through this game.

1. Participate in tournaments in the early game

Making money in the early game of Mount and Blade can be pretty tricky between buying food for your party to promote and recruiting troops to your party. Participating in tournaments is a quick (and once you get used to the combat) and easy way to make thousands of “Denars”. This can be used to upgrade your equipment and to afford all of the previously mentioned services.

2. Press R2 to increase movement speed around the map

On the Xbox or Playstation consoles, the controls of this game are a bit less clear than on PC. However whilst traversing the overworld map if you hold the right trigger on the controller you can increase the speed of the game significantly. Keep in mind though that this increases the game speed for everything; time of day, movement of other enemies and allies, everything. So it is best to use this feature when trying to travel to distant villages and towns.

3. Don’t surrender from a fight

If you are in a position where you feel you will lose a fight, surrendering the fight is probably the worst thing you can do. In mount and blade if you straight up lose a battle you get captured and you lose all the troops that you have accumulated throughout the game. other options for overwhelming battles would be to fight the odds and attempt to win the battle anyway. Or sacrifice some troops to cover your retreat, although if you do this you will lose a significant amount of morale which would make the game tricky for a short period of time.

4. Complete Quests for Small Villages

The more a village likes you the more you will be able to recruit from them and there is also the chance that the troops will start off slightly upgraded. And to increase the reputation you have with villages the best way to go about this is to complete quests from the village leaders. These tend to involve buying cattle or grain for the village, training the villagers or defending the village from bandits when you arrive. Pillaging the villages or killing criminals within the village will decrease your reputation with them.

5. Don’t level your party skills.

When levelling up you only have a limited amount of ways you can go about allocating your skills so it’s best to keep in mind ways to avoid wasting them. Fortunately, you are able to recruit named companions from around the map. When levelling your companions you can give them the party skills instead and they will benefit your army. Doing this will allow you to focus more on your Leader and Personal skills. Although in saying this, the “Trainer” skill stacks with your party, so if you and your companions have this skill levelled, it will stack together to make training your troops significantly easier.
