Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection is Being Made by Fans

SteamDB shows us all the games listed on Steam including those that haven't been released yet and sometimes, games that haven't been announced yet. Recently, someone spotted a brand new game listed on the SteamDB. Half-Life 2 is being remastered.

Valve is making a Half-Life 2 Remaster?

No. Valve is not making a Half-Life 2 Remaster. This is a fan-based project that doesn't have anything to do with Valve outside of them giving permission. It sounds a bit odd but it's not unusual for Valve to do this.

The Black Mesa game was a fan-made remake of the original game and didn't have much input from Valve except to tweak the name slightly. Black Mesa took over 10 years to complete and Valve was happy to allow it to be published and sold on their platform.

Who is making it then?

The SteamDB page points out “this is a mod from Filip Victor, not valve related” to make sure no one gets confused. Tyler McVicker on Twitter also posted that he confirmed the project was legit and being worked on by the former Half-Life 2: Update team. For those who don't know, Half-Life 2: Update is a free mod that was released to Steam by Filip Victor as a standalone updated version for Half-Life 2. It included a complete lighting overhaul, new particle effects and even a Community Commentary Mode featuring well-known Youtubers.

So the developer is experienced with updating Half-Life 2 so it's not too surprising they decided to extend it further.

Somethings I just don't want to see in updated graphics...

What do we know about it?

There's not much information at the moment about Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection. The SteamDB page lists multiple packages at the moment which all seem to be for development purposes. However, the earliest “Last Record Update” listed on them are for the 6th October 2020 and the Review Build DLC has the “Last Update” listed as 21st August 2020.

We don't have a release date for Half-Life 2 Remastered Collection and the SteamDB is currently sending users to the Steam home page if someone clicks on the Store link. Hopefully we can expect some kind of update relatively soon.
