Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 without the multiplayer portion and all the development focus was immediately put toward fixing the serious technical problems at launch. It was always expected to receive a multiplayer mode after release but it looks like this will never happen now.
After having a chance to speak with CD Projekt Red, EuroGamer explains that the multiplayer mode was killed due to the launch condition of the game. The team had to switch priorities which means that “other R&D projects had to go away” including the multiplayer and other things they originally wanted to do. While the multiplayer mode was abandoned, the team didn't forget about it.
In an investor presentation, the company states it now wants to focus on “bringing online into all of our franchises one day”. Cyberpunk 2077 is unlikely to ever be given official multiplayer support but there's a good chance the sequel will.
