FidelityFX - Fix Up Look Sharp

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

AMD’s FidelityFX toolkit is available now for development use on the Xbox Series consoles.

What does this mean for us players?

Simply put, the already beautiful graphic capabilities of the X Series consoles are going to get even better.

From AMD’s site.

“AMD FidelityFX is our open-source image quality toolkit comprising of eight different solutions available for developers to implement into their games that are optimized for AMD RDNA™ and RDNA™ 2 architectures. FidelityFX helps deliver ultimate visual quality with minimal performance overhead, freeing up your graphics card to power the incredible gaming experiences you demand."

Console gaming is about to become even more in line with the levels of game quality already experienced by high end PCs. Don’t get me wrong, I'm sure the PC master race have something more to maintain their lead with, but as someone who primarily plays on their console, this is a win.

The eight tools that are available as part of the AMD FidelityFX kit are:

FidelityFX Contrast Adaptive Sharpening

FidelityFX Ambient Occlusion

FidelityFX Variable Shading

FidelityFX Screen Space Reflections

FidelityFX Denoiser

FidelityFX HDR Mapper

FidelityFX Downsampler

FidelityFX Parallel Sort

I’d highly recommend checking out the fun side by side image comparisons on AMD’s site, link at bottom of article, for a better understanding of what each of these can do.

This does give Xbox an extra arrow in it’s quiver in the hardware comparisons to the PlayStation 5, for now. Though the PS5 does also use an AMD GPU so may be getting similar in the future.

However, for anyone who’s followed the RDNA2 discourse regarding these two machines, I do wonder if this is one of the advantages Xbox will maintain for their patience in waiting for the newer tech to be released before starting production on the Series consoles.

Though the PS5 does have some custom solutions to bring it near in line with an RDNA2 architecture, if this will support the new FidelityFX toolkit is neither confirmed or denied by AMD.

Fingers crossed it will. As regardless of if you’re team green or blue. Giving game devs the ability to push the limits of these consoles is a win for everyone.
