EA has announced a significant shift in the direction of The Sims franchise, moving beyond traditional numbered titles to offer a broader range of experiences. This new strategy aims to enhance The Sims universe while continuing to support The Sims 4, which has attracted over 80 million players since its launch a decade ago.
During a recent announcement, Kate Gorman, EA’s vice president and general manager of The Sims franchise, explained that the series has typically relied on sequential releases (Sims 1, 2, 3, and 4). However, the company is now adopting a model that allows for more engagement across various platforms without losing player progress from The Sims 4. Players will be able to carry forward their families and creations, ensuring continuity as new directions are explored.
In addition to these changes, EA will launch The Sims 4 Creator Kits this November, enabling players to officially share collections of in-game assets. The company is also re-releasing two titles from the MySims series for Nintendo Switch. EA’s focus will include diverse gameplay experiences such as cozy games, social and collaborative gameplay, and mobile narrative games, while The Sims 4 will continue to receive expansions and updates.
Another exciting development is Project Rene, a free-to-play title featuring solo and multiplayer gameplay that will allow players to connect in a new world. An invite-only playtest for Project Rene is expected this fall. Additionally, a feature film adaptation of The Sims is in the works, produced by LuckyChap and directed by Kate Herron.
With these initiatives, EA aims to redefine The Sims franchise, emphasizing innovation and community engagement while keeping players connected to their in-game creations.
